How’s your summer working out? I’ve just got back from 10 days in the Pyrenees and managed to only buy two records – a Jimmy Witherspoon EP and a Jacques Dutronc compilation; the rest of my money went on rum and cheese, pretty much…

Soul Finger #4

I was more than pleased to play a couple of slots at last week’s fourth instalment of Soul Finger at the Cumberland Arms, alongside Ethan McDermott and Rob Heron. The usual mix of northern, rhythm and blues, some mod gems and the like. A few people asked if I’d recorded it – like I’m that organised! – but I have recreated it.

A few points: I played two sets, but I’ve joined them into one here; while I know what I played, I can’t remember the order, so this isn’t entirely representative; I’ve left out a couple of tunes that just didn’t work as well as I’d hoped; and since I don’t have my decks set up  in the same room at home, this is a digital recreation of a vinyl set. But hey, tunes are tunes, right?

Some Stagger Lee Activity

It’s been a bit quiet of late but there’s a fairly hefty list of new gigs coming up you should know about.

On December 10th, the Tea Pad are presenting another of their annual Ho Ho Hokum events and I’ll be joining Marc ‘Slap Ya Mama Big Band’ Griffiths on the decks. This is a blast every year, so don’t miss it. Details here

ho-ho

The following Saturday I’ll be back at the Cumberland for the third Soul Finger. Ethan has had to drop out so I’ll be his glamorous but elderly stunt double for the evening (hence not being on the flyer). These are also always a lot of fun. Details here

Then, I’m really pleased to announce I’ll be spending another New Year’s Eve in my home-from-home of the Calder Valley. The Country Club / Trash Manor crew are taking over the mighty Golden Lion in Todmorden again, and I’ve been asked to join the hotter-than-hot DJ bill upstairs – Pete Dillinger, Wa Ka, Red Tin Dave and myself being an almost complete reunion of the 2014 NYE Three Wise Monkeys party line-up. No idea what I’m gonna play yet, but it’s gonna be funky. Details here

Then we’re into the new year. The second Jumpin’ With Stagger Lee will be at Ernest on January 21st (guests tbc) and the third will be on April 29th (with Rob Heron joining me).

Finally – for now – there’s going to be a new reggae night at Ernest called Riddim on April 1st.  It’ll cover the best of JA sounds from rocksteady to roots, dub to dancehall and all points in between. Rob Heron will be joining me for that too, and if it goes well there may well be more.

Sharon Jones is still being mourned round these parts, expect to hear something from her at a fair few of these gigs.

Soul Finger

Just to make my life as hectic as possible, I can confirm I’m now joining Rob Heron and friends to play some tunes at the second Soul Finger night at the Cumberland Arms on September 23rd, the night before the aforementioned Jumpin’ With Stagger Lee night at Ernest. You should come, but only if you’re still coming the following night. Otherwise, save your energy 😉
