Jumpin’ 27

Jumpin #27

There’s a distinct lack of soul in this new mix. I mean, there’s SOME, but much less than usual. But there is psychobilly, garage, African, LOTS of jazz, country, tropicalia, sixties pop, folk and more. (seriously, LOTS of jazz) – this is another live mix, and that’s just where it took me.

There’s tracks from new (or newish) albums from Sons of Kemet, Shannon Shaw (two, because she’s wonderful) and Angelique Kidjo. And we kick off with a Cramps track by way of a tribute to Nick Knox who passed last week.

  1. The Cramps – Garbageman
  2. Commander Cody – Hot Rod Lincoln
  3. Daddy Long Legs – I Feel So Electric
  4. Love – Bummer in the Summer
  5. Shannon Shaw – Broke My Own
  6. Liz Brady – Il Suffit D’un Jour
  7. King Khan & The Shrines – Stone Soup
  8. The Detroit Cobras – My Baby Loves The Secret Agent
  9. Tony Joe White – Elements and Things
  10. Buck Owens – Sam’s Place
  11. Sons Of Kemet – My Queen Is Harriet Tubman
  12. Angélique Kidjo – Once in a Lifetime
  13. The Heptones – Love Me Girl
  14. Bob Marley & The Wailers – Mr. Brown (A.K.A. Dracula)
  15. Bill Withers – Use Me
  16. Baby Huey & The Babysitters – One Dragon, Two Dragon
  17. Joe Jackson – Steppin’ Out
  18. Miles Davis – Milestones
  19. Shannon Shaw – Freddies ‘n’ Teddies

  28. Peggy Lee – What Are You Doing the Rest of Your Life?
  29. fIREHOSE – In Memory Of Elizabeth Cotton

A Little Christmas Jumpin’

Jumpin 24

Here’s a little Christmas gift – the best thing about it being there are almost no bloody Christmas songs on it (The Staple Singers got through the filter because IT’S THE BLOODY STAPLE SINGERS AND THEY CAN DO WHAT THEY WANT).

So when the turkey is just a hollowed-out carcass that the dog is eyeing greedily, everyone has fallen out and you’re drunk out of your tiny mind on snowballs and sherry, stick this mix on. Have a dance, have another drink and by the time it slips into the slow, melancholy, quiet section at the end, you’ll be collapsing into a carb-fuelled slumber anyhow.

There’s a couple of tracks from the newish Preservation Hall Jazz Band, which has been blowing my tiny mind, and something from the imminent new Stick In The Wheel album. Otherwise it’s the usual blend of tunes that I’ve been listening to a lot lately.

  1. Preservation Hall Jazz Band – Mad
  2. Bunny Sigler – Let The Good Times Roll

  12. The MarKeys – Last Night
  13. Earl Harrison – Humphrey Stomp
  14. Elsie Wheat – Tippin’
  15. James Hunter Six– Light Of My Life
  16. The Megatons – Shimmy Shimmy Pt 1
  17. Nick & The Jaguars -Ichi-bon #1

Jumpin’ 23

Hi folks. Time for a new Jumpin’ With Stagger Lee mix. No theme for this one – mostly just stuff I’ve bought lately but also a heartfelt adios to two absolute giants, Harry Dean Stanton and Fats Domino

A handful of tunes from recent or upcoming albums from The Frightnrs, Jessica Lea Mayfield, Micah P Hinson and The Band Of Holy Joy. And a bit more reggae than usual because I’ve pickled up some gems lately.

By the way (because a couple of people asked me) these mixes aren’t really supposed to be representative of what gets played at Jumpin’ nights: the first 2/3rds or so is, but I tend to end each mix with some slower, quieter tracks, which isn’t how things go when I play out. Come find out at the next Jumpin’ With Stagger Lee down at Ernest on November 25th…

Soul Finger #4

I was more than pleased to play a couple of slots at last week’s fourth instalment of Soul Finger at the Cumberland Arms, alongside Ethan McDermott and Rob Heron. The usual mix of northern, rhythm and blues, some mod gems and the like. A few people asked if I’d recorded it – like I’m that organised! – but I have recreated it.

A few points: I played two sets, but I’ve joined them into one here; while I know what I played, I can’t remember the order, so this isn’t entirely representative; I’ve left out a couple of tunes that just didn’t work as well as I’d hoped; and since I don’t have my decks set up  in the same room at home, this is a digital recreation of a vinyl set. But hey, tunes are tunes, right?
